When the FBI discovers that bribery and murder are at the heart of a conspiracy to entrap and extort Members of Congress, they turn to an unlikely source for help, the Caretaker.
Appointed to fill the seat of a deceased United States Senator as a caretaker, someone to hold the seat until the next election, our improbable hero infiltrates the scheme, accepting tens of millions in bribes in return for his vote on key legislation.
The Caretaker puts himself and his family in grave danger while he works to save his country. The Bureau’s investigation zeroes in on a cruel and eccentric Saudi banker known only as the Voice who leads the conspirators, and a K Street powerhouse, known to use extraordinary means to accomplish their client’s objectives.
Voice of Death is set in the rough and tumble sphere of politics and what happens when that world collides with sex, murder, and madness. It’s a story about an activist turned lawmaker turned FBI asset; a battle between good and evil, with an improbable hero who finds himself right in the middle.
Our protagonist, the Caretaker, is an American everyman who loves his country, his time outside of career and family spent active in politics. He’s seen to have no aspirations to hold high office, just someone who wants to be a good citizen and do his part. Driven to serve, but not entirely altruistic.
The Caretaker is highly intelligent, competent, calculating, operating on a higher level, always two steps ahead, and knowing how to navigate the traps. He has an extraordinary sense of perception and often seems to know what is about to happen before it does. He can sense people’s intentions, and when he encounters the presence of evil, he recognizes it for what it is.
Freshly appointed to fill an unexpired term after the sudden death of a United States Senator, someone to hold the seat as a “caretaker” until the next election, the FBI recruits him to assist in their probe into a conspiracy involving Members of Congress. As the plot thickens, he discovers that bribery, prostitution, extortion, and murder are at play.
The Voice, an eccentric Middle Eastern banker with ties to terrorism and in league with a K Street lobbying powerhouse and a former diplomat who married into the Saudi royal family, conspires to bribe and extort Members of Congress. Selling power and influence, lobbying on steroids, they funnel hundreds of millions of dollars into offshore accounts of corrupted Members. And they line their pockets with taxpayer dollars from contracts diverted by moles they’ve placed deep within the bureaucracy. The Voice won’t hesitate to kill to protect the enterprise.
As expected by the FBI, the group targets the Caretaker. He’s confronted with a dirty priest, an enforcer known to murder, and the death of an intern turned sex slave. He faces grave danger on the inside of the conspiracy while playing the pivotal role in its unraveling. His family threatened, the Caretaker kills a man to protect them.
His Governor, who finds himself in a tight reelection race, asks him to rethink his caretaker status and stand for election to bolster the ticket. They orchestrate a draft movement, and the Caretaker runs while playing the stressful dual roles of corrupt Senator and covert operative.
As the scheme unravels, the powerful Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee commits suicide, and in a predawn raid, the FBI arrests multiple Members of Congress. The President addresses the nation. The Voice kills his partner and escapes capture, descending into madness as he learns of the Caretaker’s role in his demise. He plots to assassinate the President and the Caretaker but dies when in a blind rage, he prematurely detonates his bomb.
The Caretaker, lauded by the President for his role in bringing down the conspiracy, wins election in a landslide and carries the Governor to victory with him. He ends his story contemplating the threat posed by the deep state and permanent government, wondering if he has made a dent and what the future holds.
